Changing your registered office address at Companies House takes about 10 minutes online. But there are several follow-up steps most directors forget.

Step 1: File Form AD01 at Companies House

Log in to the Companies House WebFiling service and file an AD01 (change of registered office address). It is free and usually processed within 24 hours. The new address must be in the same jurisdiction as your current one (England & Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland).

Step 2: Notify HMRC

HMRC does not automatically pick up the change from Companies House. You need to update your address separately for corporation tax, VAT, and PAYE. Use your Government Gateway account or call the HMRC helpline.

Step 3: Update Your Bank

Your business bank needs the new address. Most banks require written notification or an online form. Some will send a verification letter to the new address.

Step 4: Update Insurance, Contracts, and Stationery

  • Business insurance policy
  • Any contracts that reference your old address
  • Business cards, letterheads, invoices
  • Your website, email signatures, and social media profiles
  • Any directory listings (Google Business Profile, Yell, etc.)

Step 5: Set Up Mail Forwarding

Post will continue arriving at your old address for weeks or months. Set up mail forwarding with Royal Mail or arrange collection from the old address during the transition.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting HMRC: The most common error. Companies House and HMRC are separate systems.
  • Using a PO Box: Companies House does not accept PO Boxes.
  • Not checking jurisdiction: You cannot move from England & Wales to Scotland without re-registering.
